Weld seam detection in tubes with magnetic flux leakage or eddy current sensors is necessary in pipe and tube bending machines, or in hydroforming presses when cnc tube bending automotive components such as exhaust manifolds, head rests, side members, roll bars, or engine cradles. Tube weld seam positioning is not only required for pipe and tube bending but also for laser tube cutting, tube forming, tube punching, tube end forming, and tube notching.
Other applications are the detection and elimination of welds after coil joining in decoilers, blanking presses, or cut-to-length lines thus enabling the use of lower cost welded coils. A related application is the detection of weld seams in wires and rods and cable connections in the extrusion process.
A special application of weld seam location is the positioning of 55 gallon drums or similar containers for silk screen printing purposes.
