Learning Technology, Shaping the Future – Our Apprentices Report on Their First 6 Months

What does technical training really look like in practice?

Two of our apprentices share insights into their first months at ROLAND ELECTRONIC and show which exciting tasks they have already been able to take on.

An apprenticeship is the first step toward a professional future. At ROLAND ELECTRONIC, we place great importance on giving our apprentices practical insights into our work areas from the very beginning. In their first months, they already get to know different technologies, processes, and departments and actively contribute to our products.

Two of our current apprentices – Laxsegan Tharmaseelan, who is training as an Electronics Technician for Devices and Systems, and Samuel Pfenninger, who has started his training as a Mechatronics Technician – have been part of our team for around six months. During this time, they have already taken on many exciting tasks and gained valuable experience.

Apprenticeship as an Electronics Technician for Devices and Systems

Laxsegan Tharmaseelan is completing his apprenticeship as an Electronics Technician for Devices and Systems at ROLAND Electronic. In the first months of his training, the focus was initially on getting to know our products, processes, and technologies.

One of his first tasks was order picking, which helped him gain a good overview of our products and production processes.

Soon after, he was also able to support work in the field of sensor technology. Here, he assisted in the assembly and testing of various sensors and learned how our sensors are constructed and which quality requirements apply in production.

Another important part of his training is soldering electronic components. Through many practical exercises and work on real components, he was able to develop important skills in electronics manufacturing early on.

As his training progressed, additional tasks were added, including:

  • Reading and understanding circuit diagrams
  • Learning about and processing SMD components
  • Assembling printed circuit boards (PCBs)
  • Soldering SMD components
  • Testing finished circuit boards
  • Manufacturing replacement components

In addition, Laxsegan gained his first insights into working with a CNC lathe. Currently, he is often involved in precise soldering work, which requires a high level of concentration and accuracy.

“My apprenticeship as an electronics technician at Roland Electronic shows me day by day how I grow through patience, curiosity, and technical understanding – and that real quality comes from care, knowledge, and experience.”
– Laxsegan Tharmaseelan, Apprentice Electronics Technician for Devices and Systems

Apprenticeship as a Mechatronics Technician

Samuel Pfenninger is also gaining new practical experience every day during his training as a Mechatronics Technician.

During the first three months, the focus was mainly on the basics of metalworking. During this time, he learned important craftsmanship skills and gained his first practical experience in CNC turning.

He also worked with measuring instruments, particularly calipers, and learned about manufacturing tolerances. This knowledge is especially important to produce components precisely and accurately.

Soldering tasks were also part of his responsibilities, demonstrating how versatile the profession of a mechatronics technician is.

Since the beginning of the year, Samuel has been able to deepen his knowledge further. During this time, he learned milling techniques and CNC programming and became more familiar with automated manufacturing processes.

Another important part of his training is reading and understanding technical drawings, which form the basis for the manufacturing and assembly of many components.

“With discipline and hard work, small steps lead to great success and progress.”
– Samuel Pfenninger, Apprentice Mechatronics Technician

Apprenticeships with a Future at ROLAND ELECTRONIC
