Eagle Eye AA - Innovative eddy current sensor

Detection of layers, butt joints and edges in semi-finished products

[Translate to Englisch:] Argusauge AA - Innovativer Sensor auf Wirbelstrombasis

Roland Electronic offers a remarcable solution with its new product „Eagle Eye AA” for mechanical engineering. It refers to an innovative sensor idea based on the universal inductive sensor principle.

In order to emphasize the particular characteristics, Roland decided to label the sensor „Eagle Eye AA“. The decision was not taken without a good reason: The term refers to the eagle’s special capacity to simultaneously scan a large area for prey very similar to Argus, who was a hundred-eyed giant in Greek mythology. While sleeping, a certain number of eyes were always awake to ensure continuous monitoring. In the figurative sense the “Eagle Eye AA” consists of several coupled coils to ensure secure detection of the properties of metal stacks, butt joints and edges in semi-finished products. If something comes into the inductive “field of view”, then it will not loose the sight of it, with the vision of an eagle’s eye.

The detection of all metals is possible. The „Eagle Eye AA“ is capable to detect especially structural material boundaries in metals. Air gaps between butt joints or stacked sheets and steps resulting from joining different types and thicknesses of metal sheets are detected with this simple low cost device which otherwise would require more elaborate and complex systems. Together with the control unit XA100-S Roland offers a cost efficient and powerful system to master such tasks reliably. In conjunction with the XA100-S switching signals can be directly processed. The maximum transportation velocity of the material depends on the sample rate of the system in use. Depending on the application it is necessary that the PLC has the ability to sample and to process the sensor signal with 1 KHz.

The measurements can be performed in a static or dynamic mode. A basic condition is always a constant distance between sensor and material and the proper alignment of the sensor:
- Rectangular alignment to the material, e.g. at stacked sheets or
- Parallel alignment to the sheet surface, e.g. at butt joints

The sensor is available in 3 versions, depending on the single sheet thickness and the distance to the material.

Technical Data:

Simple sheet thickness:   0.2 to 8 mm, depending on sensor and material (0.008 to 0.315 in)
Distance to the sheet: 3 to 15 mm (0.118 to 0.590 in)
Analog output:  4 to 20 mA or 2 to 10 V
Sensor weight:  250 or 500 g, depending on sensor (0.551 or 1.102 lbs)
Conformity:   CE
